A+ Math Sites
A+ Math
Education World Review: This site was created by a group of software engineers and an elementary school teacher as an interactive math Web site for kids. Users can view flashcards (where the user supplies a missing component) for basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as reducing fractions, currency calculations, and geometric shapes. Viewers can play a math version of bingo or play a "Hidden Picture" game. The Homework Helper section allows users to input a problem and its answer and the computer will reply whether or not the solution is correct. Users must retry until the answer is right. This is a great way to teach math to students because they will be having fun while they are learning and they'll want to learn more. Individual lesson plans could be built around the site or students could visit the site on their own to improve their math skills.
AAA Math
Education World Review: This site provides hundreds of pages of basic math lessons and activities that can be used by students for remediation, by teachers to supplement the curriculum, or by home-schooling parents. More than twenty topics from addition to geometry to ratios to place value are presented for grade levels K-8. Each lesson includes online practice, an explanation, and a challenge game. Students can choose the appropriate grade level and skill to work on at their own pace. One problem at a time is presented with positive reinforcement for correct answers. The timed practice and challenge games are a great way to increase speed, accuracy, and confidence while having fun.
Apply Lessons: Applications of Math
Education World Review: Have your math students ever complained, “Why do we have to do this stuff, anyway?” Well, this site has the answers! These math lessons show how math is used in everyday applications. Lessons are linked to such occupations as electrical engineer, fire fighter, event planner, house painter, golf pro, and many more. Each lesson includes the application of the math involved, practice for in class discussion, the mathematics principle, hands-on learning experience for students, and the opportunity for students to use their learning to solve a real-life problem. Additionally, many of the lessons provide extensions and extra practice.
Cool Math
Education World Review: Whether you need to practice your math skills or just have some fun, Cool Math is the place to go. The interactive games are sure to have the younger set engaged for hours. For example, in Number Monster, children can play against the computer to practice the four operations of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. The player chooses the operation and the level of difficulty, ranging from easy to hard to killer to monster. The game displays a problem, and the player types in the answer. Kids 13+ will find lessons on geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and algebra, an interactive area with puzzles and number games, and articles on "How to Succeed in Math" and "Careers in Math." Included are a Fractal Gallery that kids of all ages will enjoy and a Fractal of the Day. Youngsters not only will improve their math skills but also will have fun doing it.
Aunty Math
Education World Review: Aunt Matilda Matthews, better known as Aunty Math can add a little spice to your math class. The site offers challenging problems right from the life of Aunty Math, her niece Gina, and nephews Barney and Danny. Every other week, Aunty Math presents a new problem solving challenge, correlated to N.T.C.M. Standards, that encourages children to use their thinking skills. These challenges are written in age-appropriate language and in a fun way that kids will love. Students can send in their solutions and their strategies for solving the challenges to have them posted on the Web site. Parents and teachers will find tips on extending the lessons for special learners, an archive of past challenges, and a discussion of solution strategies.

These online worksheets are self-correcting and can be used as a great reinforcement to classroom instruction or homeschooling. Topics range from the simplest counting exercises for young children to sequencing to rounding to money to decimals and fractions. Each worksheet is interactive and gives the student immediate feedback. A detailed report summary is generated each time an assignment is submitted that shows the number of correct, wrong and skipped responses as well as a copy of the worksheet that shows which problems were missed.
